Researchers from the University of British Columbia (UBC) found that <strong>climate change drastically increases harvest instability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For every single degree of global warming, year-to-year crop variability rises by 7 percent for corn, 19 percent for soy, and 10 percent for sorghum. <strong>These numbers may seem abstract, but for many farmers they mean the risk of bankruptcy<\/strong>. That may be just a taste of what\u2019s ahead<\/strong> \u2014 and the consequences will be felt everywhere, no matter where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drought-and-heatwaves-drive-the-agriculture-crisis\">Drought and Heatwaves Drive the Agriculture Crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What drives this phenomenon? Dr. Proctor points to a \u201cdouble punch of heat and drought that increasingly strike together.\u201d <strong>Hot air dries <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/nitrogen-in-fertilizers-stops-locusts-yields-jump\/\">the soil<\/a>, and dry soil worsens heat by allowing temperatures to rise faster<\/strong> \u2014 a vicious cycle that could soon create a massive agricultural crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Proctor compares it to running while dehydrated: <em>\u201cIf you\u2019re hydrated and you go for a run, your body sweats to cool you down. But if you\u2019re dehydrated, you risk heatstroke. The same processes make dry fields hotter than wet ones.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study suggests that irrigation can help stabilize harvests \u2014 but water isn\u2019t always available.
