Yet beneath its crimson surface lies something that has surprised scientists \u2014 and brought it closer to Earth. Breakthrough data from NASA\u2019s InSight mission let researchers probe deeper than ever before and revealed a secret that could change our understanding of the planet\u2019s entire history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is Mars\u2019s core like? Until now, we thought it was entirely liquid. The latest finding by Chinese researchers, published in the prestigious journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09361-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Nature<\/a><\/em>, shows something very different: at the center sits a <strong>solid inner core<\/strong>, surrounded by a liquid outer core. It\u2019s almost a copy of Earth\u2019s interior structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-mars-mission-packed-with-results\">A Mars mission packed with results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The InSight lander mission, which ended in 2022, proved to be a true gold mine of knowledge about Mars. During its operations, the instrument recorded <strong>1,300 \u201cmarsquakes.\u201d<\/strong> Twenty-three of them \u2014 though relatively weak \u2014 allowed scientists to peer deeper into the planet than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to these data, we now know that Mars\u2019s inner core <strong>is about 613 kilometers in diameter<\/strong> and \u2014 like Earth\u2019s \u2014 is composed mainly of iron and nickel. The surprise was the presence of lighter elements such as oxygen. Even more striking, the surrounding outer <strong>core is liquid and extends to about 1,800 kilometers<\/strong> from the planet\u2019s center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-breakthrough-study-of-mars-s-interior\">A breakthrough study of Mars\u2019s interior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Daoyuan Sun of the University of Science and Technology of China, one of the study\u2019s lead authors, told the <em>Associated Press<\/em>: \u201cOur results suggest that Mars has a solid inner core that accounts for about 20 percent of the planet\u2019s radius \u2014 roughly the same proportion as Earth\u2019s inner core. <strong>However, that similarity could be coincidental<\/strong>.\u201d He adds that Mars\u2019s core was originally completely liquid, and its crystallization may have started in the past and may still be ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-riddle-of-mars-s-magnetic-field\">The riddle of Mars\u2019s magnetic field<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery of a solid inner core opens new, fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/ancient-martian-ocean-a-blue-past\/\">questions<\/a>. On Earth, motion in the core generates a strong magnetic field that shields us from cosmic radiation. Mars lacks such a shield \u2014 and that changes everything. Could the slow crystallization of the Red Planet\u2019s core have stripped it of a magnetosphere? And if so, is that why Mars lost its atmosphere and became a barren desert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholas Schmerr of the University of Maryland in College Park, though not involved in the study, praises the results but stresses that our knowledge of Mars\u2019s interior remains incomplete: \u201cNailing down many details of the inner core\u2019s exact shape and the compositions of Mars\u2019s inner and outer core will <strong>require a network of seismographic stations similar to InSight<\/strong>.\u201d With InSight shut down, new seismic data are no longer available, making further research much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More detailed models are needed to fully understand <strong>how Mars\u2019s core formed and how that relates to the history of its magnetic field<\/strong>.
