EU weighs bans."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An ocean of harmful content is flooding the youngest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have social media become the biggest threat to the mental health of the young generation? French MPs have issued a report calling for radical steps. Laure Miller, the report\u2019s author, warns of an \u201cocean of harmful content\u201d filled with videos \u201cpromoting suicides and self-harm\u201d and \u201cshowing all kinds of violence.\u201d <strong>Hence the report proposes a ban on social media for children under 15 and a \u201cdigital curfew\u201d from 22:00 to 8:00 for teenagers aged 15\u201318<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TikTok platform, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and counting more than 1.5 billion users, has become the main target of criticism. Miller argues that the <strong>app locks young users into hermetic \u201cbubbles\u201d of such content, using an addictive algorithm<\/strong> that \u201chas been copied by other social media.\u201d The idea already has the support of French President Emmanuel Macron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will a social media ban for children save the young?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Real tragedies stand behind the report. G\u00e9raldine, the mother of an 18-year-old who died by suicide last year, discovered after her daughter\u2019s death videos of self-harm that the girl had posted and watched on TikTok. \u201cTikTok didn\u2019t kill our little girl, because she wasn\u2019t feeling well anyway,\u201d the 52-year-old told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20250911-french-lawmakers-urge-social-media-ban-for-under-15s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">France24<\/a><\/em>. <strong>She accuses the platform, however, of improper moderation and of deepening her daughter\u2019s dark impulses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar alarm has sounded in Sweden. Health Minister Jakob Forssmed warns: \u201c<strong>We are losing an entire generation to endless scrolling and harmful content.<\/strong>\u201d Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/sweden-health-minister-jakob-forssmed-children-social-media-restrictions-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>POLITICO<\/em>,<\/a> he adds that social media use among youth is \u201cthe most important health issue there is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the urging of Swedish politicians, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced the <strong>creation of an expert panel<\/strong> to study <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/australias-social-media-ban-experts-warn-of-dark-web-risk\/\">Australia\u2019s model<\/a> of banning social media for people under 16. The European Commission is to issue a recommendation for the entire European Union by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TikTok on the defensive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A TikTok spokesperson \u201ccategorically rejects the misleading presentation\u201d by French MPs, claiming the platform has become a \u201cscapegoat\u201d for broader social problems. The company also emphasizes that the <strong>safety of young users is its \u201ctop priority,\u201d touting 98 percent effectiveness for AI-assisted moderation<\/strong>.
