A heterosexual father of three who didn\u2019t use drugs, he didn\u2019t fit the typical profile of a patient. The diagnosis, painful as it was, propelled an important decision \u2014<strong> in 2019 he enrolled in a rapid-autopsy program within the Last Gift Study at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)<\/strong>. His body would be examined in detail within an hour of death. How can a rapid autopsy help in treating AIDS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although antiretroviral drugs can suppress the virus to nearly undetectable levels, they can\u2019t eliminate it entirely. <em>\u201c<strong>HIV hides in tissues<\/strong>, and one reason we really can\u2019t cure people is that <strong>we don\u2019t know where it hides<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em> explains <strong>Dr. Sara Gianella Weibel<\/strong>, who co-leads the Last Gift project, speaking to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/last-gift-how-bodies-donated-research-may-help-find-cure-hiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Science<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Worth reading:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/a-simple-blood-test-to-treat-childhood-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A New Hope for Children with Cancer. Polish Scientists Bring a Breakthrough<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating AIDS \u2014 and rapid autopsy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conventional autopsies are done a day or two after death, when cells have already died. The <strong>Last Gift Study<\/strong> is a pioneering project that performs autopsies within hours. Cells are still alive, they can be cultured in laboratories, and \u2014 crucially \u2014 scientists can locate where HIV hides for <strong>autopsy for AIDS <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/new-antibiotic-against-superbugs-found-by-accident\/\">treatment<\/a><\/strong> strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, 62 participants have enrolled and 42 rapid autopsies have been conducted. The research shows <strong>the largest HIV reservoirs are often in the gut and lymph nodes<\/strong>, but their exact size and location vary widely between individuals. That means a potential cure for AIDS will have to be highly personalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One participant who stopped antiretrovirals a few weeks before death allowed scientists to track how quickly the virus rebuilds its reservoirs. <em>\u201cOne of the most important things we learned is that blood rapidly repopulates those reservoirs,<\/em>\u201d says <strong>Dr. Davey Smith<\/strong>, founder of Last Gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethical dilemmas \u2014 and hopes for the future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also raises controversy. Jules Levin of the National AIDS Treatment Advocacy Project has \u201cserious issues\u201d with the ethics of the study. Are people facing death in the right state of mind to consent to donating their bodies? Is the scientific aim clear enough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite concerns, the National Institutes of Health awarded the team more than $15 million for 8 years of research. Similar efforts are now under way in Canada and Brazil. Richard Strange, 84, from Washington, <strong>always carries a note instructing that his body be delivered to a lab within 6 hours after death<\/strong>. Since his 1993 diagnosis, he has joined 18 studies on the nature of HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Jim Dunn\u2019s body continues to serve science. In the UCSD lab basement, 13 boxes \u2014 each holding 81 vials \u2014 store samples of his tissues.
