A sleeping enemy you can\u2019t detect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. No wonder clinicians keep searching for better ways to detect and treat it. Scientists in the United States have taken an important step: they managed to prevent the disease from coming back. Why does relapse happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many people who have beaten cancer, so-called dormant cancer cells<\/strong> can remain in the body. Current imaging tests can\u2019t detect them. These cells may \u201cwake up\u201d over time, trigger a recurrence, and even lead to metastases. The problem is, you can\u2019t predict when \u2014 it might be years later, or even longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It now turns out that to destroy dormant cancer cells<\/a>, it may be enough to give patients drugs already in use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They achieved 100 percent effectiveness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The researchers studied 51<\/strong> women who had beaten breast cancer within the past 5<\/strong> years. Participants were divided into three<\/strong> groups: one took hydroxychloroquine<\/strong>, another everolimus<\/strong>, and the third took both drugs<\/strong> together. All of these medicines are already approved for medical use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 3.5<\/strong> years of follow-up \u2014 results published in Nature Medicine<\/a><\/em> \u2014 the team reported promising outcomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
