What they click online"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is antagonistic narcissism?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our choices \u2014 even the seemingly trivial ones we make while scrolling online \u2014 say a lot about us. Researchers at the University of Amsterdam \u2014 Jiafang Chen, Barbara Nevicka, Astrid C. Homan, and Gerben A. van Kleef \u2014 set out to examine how a narcissist behaves on the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were especially interested in whether people high in <strong>antagonistic narcissism<\/strong> would gravitate toward stories filled with violence and conflict, or whether they would also engage with content showing cooperation and kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who are antagonistic narcissists? They are people who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>place themselves above others,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ignore others\u2019 needs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>readily enter into conflicts,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manipulate and dominate to achieve their goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How does that translate into online preferences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three headline types, three social signals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project included two main studies, as well as a series of analyses used to design the news-headline task. The researchers created <strong>three types of headlines<\/strong>. All were equally interesting but differed in <strong>social impact<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>prosocial<\/strong> \u2014 for example, \u201cA passerby helps a blind man to his feet\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>antisocial<\/strong> \u2014 for example, \u201cMother and daughter throw stones at sleeping zoo animals\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>neutral<\/strong> \u2014 for example, \u201c250 million daily users on Snapchat.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first study, participants completed a narcissism questionnaire and then chose <strong>10<\/strong> out of <strong>30<\/strong> headlines (neutral, prosocial, antisocial) that interested them most. At the same time, the team measured <strong>empathy<\/strong> and <strong>sensation seeking<\/strong>. In a follow-up test, the researchers also assessed three potential traits that could explain narcissists\u2019 choices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>their <strong>social motives<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>their <strong>capacity for empathy<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>their <strong>level of sensation seeking<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings, published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0092656625000856?via%3Dihub#s0115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Journal of Research in Personality<\/a><\/em>, leave little doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more abot <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/empathy-vs-fear-the-timeless-psychology-of-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Empathy vs. Fear. The Timeless Psychology of Power<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to spot a narcissist: what the data show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Results from both experiments revealed that narcissistic individuals showed <strong>lower empathy<\/strong> and a <strong>stronger need for intense, novel experiences<\/strong>. Both traits were linked to <strong>greater interest in antisocial content<\/strong> and <strong>less engagement with prosocial stories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, it was <strong>low empathy<\/strong> and <strong>heightened sensation seeking<\/strong> that statistically explained the link between narcissism and the types of content people preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHigher levels of antagonistic narcissism predicted selecting <strong>fewer<\/strong> prosocial items (Studies 1 and 2) and <strong>more<\/strong> antisocial items (Study 1), with both effects accounted for by <strong>lower empathy<\/strong> and <strong>higher sensation seeking<\/strong> (Study 2),\u201d <\/em>the authors report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers conclude that<strong> antagonistic narcissists lack compassion<\/strong>, which is why they don\u2019t engage with helping-focused stories. In contrast, <strong>social drama and controversy<\/strong> provide the emotional charge they seek.
