Quasi-moons follow stable yet atypical paths. <strong>They orbit the central star<\/strong> (in our case, the Sun) <strong>while moving near a specific planet, but they aren\u2019t gravitationally bound to it<\/strong>. Like Earth, 2025 PN7 needs exactly 1 year to go around the Sun, and you could say it \u201cfollows\u201d us along our route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why did it elude scientists for so long? The answer is simple \u2014 <strong>this cosmic runt is only about 30 meters across and is extremely faint<\/strong>. Some calculations put it at just 19 meters. That makes it practically invisible unless it\u2019s in just the right place at the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt can be detected by currently available telescopes only when it comes close to our planet, as it did this summer,<\/em>\u201d explains Carlos de la Fuente Marcos of the Complutense University of Madrid in a comment to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/science\/earth-quasi-moon-2025-pn7?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=missions&amp;utm_source=reddit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CNN<\/a>. <strong><em>\u201cIts visibility windows are few and far between. It\u2019s a demanding object.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key numbers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diameter: 19\u201330 m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum distance: 299,000 km (closer than the Moon \u2014 384,000 km)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orbital period: 1 year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stable orbit for roughly 60 more years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A gravitational dance with surprises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The closest approach of 2025 PN7 to Earth is an impressive <strong>299,000 kilometers \u2014 closer than our planet\u2019s average distance from the <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/moon-rock-origin-theory-shaken-nasas-50-year-secret\/\">Moon<\/a><\/strong>. Its cosmic choreography is more complex, though. The object regularly shifts from a closer, more circular path to a horseshoe-shaped orbit. During those phases, it swings out to a staggering 297 million kilometers from us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe Solar System is full of surprises, so we keep looking,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> writes de la Fuente Marcos. <em>\u201cThe existence of 2025 PN7 suggests there may be no lower size limit for a quasi-satellite.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this tiny companion pose a threat? Absolutely not. Scientists have a few theories. <strong>It could be a fragment of our Moon blasted out by an ancient impact<\/strong>, much like the quasi-moon Kamo\u02bboalewa. Another possibility is the Arjuna <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/comet-lemmon-naked-eye-when-and-where-to-look\/\">asteroid<\/a> group \u2014 small space rocks that travel on Earth-like orbits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNow we know that material ejected during lunar impacts can contribute to the formation of members of the secondary Arjuna asteroid belt,\u201d<\/em> says de la Fuente Marcos. Dr. Teddy Kareta of Villanova University adds: <em><strong>\u201cBased on what we know so far, it\u2019s almost certainly a rocky, natural object.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we now understand what a quasi-moon is, it\u2019s worth asking how precisely this one travels. Astronomers predict that 2025 PN7 will remain on its current path for another 60 years before <strong>the Sun\u2019s gravity pulls it back into a horseshoe orbit<\/strong>. At that point, the object will recede from Earth.
