China has fused the internet, massive databases, social media, and AI into a single, powerful influence machine operating both inside and outside the country&#8217;s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How does this work in practice? China has spent years amassing gigantic databases on citizens worldwide\u2014ranging from fingerprints stolen from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, to medical records from insurance companies, and financial data from banks. <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/chatgpt-adult-content-age-verification-personalization\/\">AI<\/a> is used to <strong>correlate<\/strong> this information, generating highly detailed psychological profiles. The result is the ability to conduct influence operations at a <strong>granular, individual level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defining Cognitive Warfare: The Three Key Strategies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>John Ringquist <a href=\"https:\/\/madsciblog.tradoc.army.mil\/547-challenging-reality-chinese-cognitive-warfare-and-the-fight-to-hack-your-brain\/#_ednref7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">details<\/a> the Chinese concept of <strong>\u201cThe Three Warfares.\u201d<\/strong> This methodology is designed to target \u201cpublic opinion, psychological, and legal domains to deter and demoralize potential adversaries.\u201d The three key fronts of cognitive conflict are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Media and Public Opinion<\/strong> (both within China and internationally).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>attitudes of foreign policymakers<\/strong> toward China.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shaping the legal context<\/strong> for Beijing&#8217;s actions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ringquist states: <em>\u201cBy attacking the will of the populace and its resilience to targeted messaging, <strong>future wars will be decided by the armed forces best able to control the adversary\u2019s cognitive capabilities.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em> This is the express purpose of the &#8220;Three Warfares&#8221; doctrine. Although it has been on the agenda of the P<strong>eople\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA)<\/strong> since at least 1963, it has gained recent momentum through the incorporation of modern technology. For example, in February 2025, it was revealed that a Chinese group was using an advanced AI model like ChatGPT to harvest sensitive content from social media platforms at the government&#8217;s request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PLA is actively developing a program of operations focused on acquiring and aggregating personal data. With the support of AI, this data is used to create <strong>highly personalized content<\/strong> tailored to an individual\u2019s psychological profile. This technique is simply impossible for traditional, broad-based propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cognitive Warfare Influencers: Beijing\u2019s New Tools of Influence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beijing has weaponized social media. <strong>Chinese influencers<\/strong> are penetrating global follower networks, building a state image without the overt trace of official propaganda. This method allows Beijing\u2019s narratives to seep into the mainstream public discourse before anyone can detect their origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critical thinking is no longer a luxury\u2014it\u2019s a defensive weapon. Meanwhile, algorithms dictate what we see in our search results and news feeds. In the age of AI, the ability to <strong>&#8220;hack&#8221; human minds<\/strong> allows for the control of individual decisions.
