These parents of teenagers who took their own lives after encountering toxic content on Instagram state clearly: <strong>these were not isolated tragedies; uncontrolled algorithms caused them.<\/strong> Almost ten years have passed since their children&#8217;s deaths, and the problem has not only failed to disappear\u2014<strong>algorithms still feed content<\/strong> <strong>about self-harm, eating disorders, and sexualization to young users<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Algorithm of Harm: Why Instagram Kids Are at Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers created dozens of test profiles designed to mimic real teenagers. These accounts behaved like actual <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/digital-autism-the-first-sign-is-not-looking-you-in-the-eye\/\">young users<\/a>\u2014liking, browsing, and following content. The result? The Instagram algorithm surpassed all the worst predictions\u2014despite activated safeguards, <strong>the system promoted violence, sexually <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/chatgpt-adult-content-age-verification-personalization\/\">suggestive<\/a> content, and materials encouraging self-harm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the researchers came across a truly alarming phenomenon. Simple recordings from the same profiles achieved only a fraction of those results. Clearly, the risks associated with <strong>Instagram and children<\/strong> are being amplified, not mitigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broken Features and Parental Oversight Failures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of broken features is long. The &#8220;Take a Break&#8221; tool, which was supposed to remind teenagers to pause, <strong>has apparently been removed<\/strong>\u2014even though Meta never announced its removal. Similarly, &#8220;Hidden Words,&#8221; designed to filter offensive comments, <strong>failed to stop aggressive <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/impact-of-social-media-over-half-of-gen-z-faces-online-hate\/\">messages<\/a><\/strong>. Multi-block, intended to prevent harassment by new accounts from the same person, simply did not function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When researchers paired the teenagers&#8217; accounts with parental accounts, they discovered another major issue: <strong>parents did not receive information about the content their children were actually viewing<\/strong>. The supervision panel only displayed topics of interest selected by the teenager\u2014failing to reveal that the <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/ai-influences-human-morality-max-planck-study\/\">algorithm<\/a> was recommending inappropriate materials to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demanding Accountability and Legislative Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;We cannot waste any more time or allow more children to suffer due to Meta&#8217;s self-regulation,&#8221;<\/em> the report&#8217;s authors conclude. In the USA, they call for the enactment of the Kids Online Safety Act, and in the UK, for the strengthening of the Online Safety Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the researchers urge for <strong>independent audits of safety features<\/strong>\u2014similar to those applied to safety systems in cars. Will the technology industry finally take the <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/social-media-ban-for-children\/\">protection<\/a> of Instagram kids seriously? Or will it, as it has done so far, rely on yet more empty announcements to silence criticism?
