Ultra-processed foods (UPF) were blamed for everything: <strong>obesity, heart disease, and even dementia<\/strong>. The list of accusations grew faster than the research findings. But new analyses pose a shocking question: <em>what if the biggest problem is not the food at all, but&#8230; something entirely different?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why We Overeat? Research from Leeds Scientists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scientists at the University of Leeds<\/strong> decided to check if the widespread blaming of food even makes sense. Instead of repeating worn-out slogans about &#8220;bad food,&#8221; they asked one surprisingly simple question:<strong> why do we snack on certain things so much\u2014and why is it so hard to stop eating them?<\/strong> The answer proved inconvenient because<strong> it targets not the food itself, but the way we think about it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Graham Finlayson&#8217;s team conducted three large studies involving over 3,000 British adults. Participants <strong>rated photos of 400 everyday products<\/strong>\u2014from baked potatoes and apples to ice cream and biscuits. They were asked two things: how much they liked the food and how likely they were to eat too much of it. The results were published in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0195666325001825?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Science Direct<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surprising Research Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study&#8217;s findings surprised the researchers. It turned out that <strong>the mere perception of food as sweet, fatty, or highly processed increased the likelihood of overeating.<\/strong> The actual composition and <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/green-tea-for-weight-loss-works\/\">nutritional value<\/a> were of marginal importance. Products perceived as bitter or high in fiber had the opposite effect\u2014participants wanted to eat less of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important conclusion from the study? <strong>The food&#8217;s composition is not the biggest influence on overeating.<\/strong> Scientists were able to predict seventy-eight percent of the tendency to eat beyond measure. How is this possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Forty-one percent<\/strong> was explained by the <strong>product&#8217;s actual nutrients<\/strong>, such as sugar, fat, or fiber.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thirty-eight percent<\/strong> depended on <strong>people&#8217;s beliefs about the food<\/strong>\u2014what they thought about the product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And <strong>UPF classification<\/strong>? It accounted for <strong>less than four percent<\/strong> of the difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words: <strong>the &#8220;processed&#8221; food is not the problem. The problem is how our brain works and what labels we assign to food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean that all highly processed products are <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/these-foods-work-like-ozempic-japanese-research-confirms-it\/\">harmless<\/a>. Writing in <em>The Conversation<\/em>, the experiment authors point out that many are <strong>calorie bombs with low fiber content<\/strong>. The problem is that the label drawing attention to this is a clumsy tool with limited effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Highly Processed Food Not That Bad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the study&#8217;s authors, the public debate lacks a distinction between eating products out of hunger and <strong>overeating<\/strong> for pleasure. <em>&#8220;People don&#8217;t eat based solely on labels on packaging. They eat based on how the food tastes, how it makes them feel, and how it fits their health, social, or emotional goals,&#8221; <\/em>note the Leeds scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many Latin American countries\u2014including Chile, Mexico, and Argentina\u2014<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/uk-food-import-restrictions-are-here\/\">warnings<\/a> have already been introduced on UPF products<\/strong>. Black labels are supposed to discourage the purchase of &#8220;harmful foods.&#8221; Sounds great?
