However, for individuals suffering from schizophrenia, this process can unfold in a drastically different way. Professor Whitford\u2019s team decided to examine this difference, publishing their findings in the prestigious journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/schizophreniabulletin\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/schbul\/sbaf167\/8293244?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Schizophrenia Bulletin<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#EAF5EF;border-left:4px solid #309B65;border-radius:8px;padding:14px 16px;max-width:650px;margin:16px auto;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;box-shadow:0 4px 8px rgba(0,0,0,0.08);\">\n  \ud83d\udca1 <strong>Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the population<\/strong><br>\n  Around 24 million people worldwide live with it \u2014 one in a hundred experience schizophrenia symptoms during their lifetime.\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Science Behind Hearing Voices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia is <strong>auditory hallucinations<\/strong>\u2014patients hear voices that others cannot. These often take the form of comments, commands, or conversations, which can be terrifying for the patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian researchers decided to test whether these &#8220;voices in the head&#8221; could be a <strong>disrupted form of inner speech<\/strong>. This is a situation where the brain mistakenly interprets its own internally generated thoughts as sounds coming from an external source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Australian Study on Inner vs. Outer Speech<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The experiment included <strong>142 participants<\/strong>. Some suffered from schizophrenia and experienced auditory hallucinations. Others had the diagnosis but did not hear voices. The rest were entirely healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The task prepared by the researchers seemed straightforward. Participants were asked to imagine silently pronouncing the syllable &#8220;bah&#8221; or &#8220;bih&#8221; precisely when one of these sounds was played through headphones. Crucially, they didn&#8217;t know if the sound they heard would match the sound they &#8220;spoke&#8221; in their mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, an electroencephalogram (EEG) recorded their brain activity with immense precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#EAF5EF;border-left:4px solid #309B65;border-radius:8px;padding:14px 16px;max-width:650px;margin:16px auto;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;box-shadow:0 4px 8px rgba(0,0,0,0.08);\">\n  \ud83d\udca1 <strong>Genetic and environmental factors<\/strong><br>\n  The disease has a genetic component, but its development also depends on environmental factors such as stress, prenatal infections, or substance use.\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Results Revealed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The results showed that in healthy individuals, the <strong>brain successfully distinguishes an external sound<\/strong> from one resulting from inner speech. However, this was not the case for participants with schizophrenia\u2014<strong>their brains failed to recognize the difference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is key: This failure to self-monitor explains why people with the disease hear voices\u2014<strong>their brains incorrectly interpret their own thoughts as external sounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Major Step Toward Objective Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Until now, schizophrenia diagnosis relied mainly on behavioral observation and patient interviews. A robust, <strong>biological indicator<\/strong> (<strong>biomarker<\/strong>) that would allow objective identification of the disease was missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Whitford\u2019s team&#8217;s discovery could change that. The measurement of brain activity during the distinction between inner and outer speech revealed clear differences between healthy and affected individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;This type of measurement has tremendous potential as a biomarker for schizophrenia development,&#8221;<\/em> emphasizes Prof. Whitford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers now plan to test whether this method can <strong>predict the risk of psychosis<\/strong> <em>before<\/em> the first <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/narcissism-in-relationships-6-signs-of-control\/\">symptoms<\/a> appear.
