Star went dark: a rare 9-month eclipse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2024\u20132025 dimming was extreme and unusually long-lasting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stars like the Sun don\u2019t just stop shining for no reason. So dramatic dimming events like this are very rare.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

– said<\/a> Nadia Zakamska, a professor at Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archival work also suggests this wasn\u2019t a one-off: similar dips were seen in 1937 and 1981, pointing to a repeating pattern on roughly a 44-year<\/strong> timescale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the researchers found<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Follow-up observations with Gemini South telescope<\/strong> revealed the likely culprit: an enormous, slowly drifting cloud of gas and dust<\/strong> that temporarily blocked the star. The team estimates the cloud was about 2,000,000,000 km from the star and roughly 200,000,000 km across \u2014 large enough to hide most of the starlight from our viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crucially, the cloud doesn\u2019t appear to be free-floating. Instead, the data indicate it is gravitationally bound to a second object orbiting far out in the system. The companion must be hefty: at least several times the mass of Jupiter<\/strong>, possibly more \u2014 consistent with a giant planet, a brown dwarf, or a very low-mass star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new instrument, a first-of-its-kind measurement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To probe the cloud\u2019s composition, the team used Gemini\u2019s high-resolution spectrograph GHOST<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I started observing the occultation with spectroscopy\u2026 the result exceeded all my expectations,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

– Zakamska said. The spectra showed winds of vaporized metals in the gas (including iron and calcium), and \u2014 for the first time in such a system \u2014 the team could measure internal gas motions in 3D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sensitivity of GHOST allowed us to not only detect the gas in this cloud, but to actually measure how it is moving. That\u2019s something we\u2019ve never been able to do before in a system like this,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did two planets collide?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The star also shows excess infrared emission \u2014 often associated with dusty disks \u2014 but J0705+0612<\/strong> is more than 2,000,000,000<\/strong> years old, which makes a long-lived \u201cleftover\u201d protoplanetary disk unlikely. That\u2019s why the team points to a more dramatic scenario: a major collision between two outer-system planets could have blasted huge amounts of rock, dust, and gas into orbit around the surviving companion, creating the disk-like structure that later crossed our view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
