Does good justify the evil we commit in its name?<\/strong> The question returns whenever many lives hang in the balance and the line between morality and necessity begins to blur. Can we torture one person to save hundreds? Does the violent overthrow of a totalitarian regime justify thousands of deaths? Consequentialism says yes. Deontology answers with a categorical no. Between them lies a grey zone where ordinary people turn other human beings into instruments of a \u201chigher good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Justification for Torture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Experimental psychology shows how easily people get trapped there. In The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil<\/em>, Philip Zimbardo lays bare the mechanisms that lead decent people to do terrible things<\/strong>. He does not write about evil in the abstract. He points instead to painfully concrete situations: the Stanford prison experiment and the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordinary people, with no special sadistic impulses, can begin to torment others under the right conditions, convinced that the situation demands it. They tell themselves they must keep order, protect security, follow orders, extract information that may \u201csave innocent lives.\u201d Once a guard hears that an interrogation may determine the fate of a city, or of soldiers in the field, the moral problem no longer feels theoretical<\/strong>. It becomes an operating procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language plays a crucial role here. We rarely call it torture. We reach for phrases like \u201cenhanced interrogation techniques,\u201d \u201capplying pressure,\u201d or \u201cbreaking resistance.\u201d The more neutral the language sounds, the easier it becomes to treat suffering as a tool in the service of safety. Almost every such argument smuggles in the ticking-bomb scenario. If one prisoner can save thousands, then refusing violence starts to look less like restraint than like selfishness, even naivety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zimbardo shows, however, that this logic carries a hidden cost. Once a system accepts torture in \u201cexceptional circumstances,\u201d it quickly begins to find exceptional circumstances almost everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do the Ends Justify the Means in a Holy War?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Frank Herbert\u2019s Dune<\/em> stages a similar dilemma on an epic scale. Paul Atreides fights, at least in outward terms, for the freedom of the Fremen and the collapse of a corrupt order. He sees the injustice, exploitation, and brutality of the old regime clearly enough. But victory comes at a price: a holy war sweeps across world after world<\/strong>, and the number of dead soon surpasses anything he once imagined. The revolution begins in the name of good and ends in a wave of violence that no one can control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That fictional arc inevitably recalls modern attempts to \u201cliberate\u201d societies, Iraq among them. There, too, leaders framed the overthrow of a brutal ruler as a necessity undertaken for the good of the population and the security of the world. They removed the dictator, but they also plunged the country into chaos, civil war<\/a>, and deepening radicalisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some defenders of intervention saw that outcome as the unavoidable cost of higher values. Others saw proof that, in the name of good, people can set a machinery of destruction<\/strong> in motion and then lose all power over it. Herbert, though writing science fiction, captures that turning point with unusual clarity. The good that once claimed to justify violence soon answers to violence instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
