A tyranny born of love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly my father had his own court behind the house, which meant my prison was already standing. I helped feed the crew building my cell. I helped measure and paint the white lines that would bind me. Why did I do it? I had no choice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So recalls the famous tennis player Andre Agassi in his autobiography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agassi describes his father as someone who, \u201cfor his own good,\u201d turned childhood into training and confinement. No one asked the young Andre whether he wanted to play tennis, whether he wanted to dedicate his life to it. His father decided for him. In Agassi\u2019s account, the father does not appear simply as a tyrant, but as someone convinced he was carrying out a necessary plan\u2014someone who believed he knew who his son should become. He believed he knew what was truly best for his child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From an adult perspective, Agassi can see that it was a form of love\u2014harsh, unable to express itself differently. But the consequences were devastating. Despite extraordinary success in sport and finance, he struggled with depression, identity crises, and a deep inner emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When love turns into a project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Agassi\u2019s story is not unique. Many parents genuinely want the best for their child<\/strong>. They wake up at dawn, give up their own dreams, invest every resource\u2014time, money, energy\u2014so that the child can \u201csucceed.\u201d They train, motivate<\/a>, and push forward. From the outside, it looks like pure devotion. Inside, however, the child increasingly feels trapped\u2014without the right to say \u201cno,\u201d without space for their own voice, without the possibility of simply being themselves. And suddenly, the question of what is truly best for a child becomes deeply complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between care and control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The line between love and control is often very thin\u2014especially when the adult sincerely believes they know what is best. Behind training sessions, language courses, and extra classes, there may be genuine care. But there may also be fear: of poverty, failure, mediocrity, or judgment from others. In such cases, the child\u2019s well-being stops being the child\u2019s lived experience and becomes the parent\u2019s projection\u2014their plan, their ambition<\/a>, their attempt to secure the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a distance, it becomes clear how often childhood is shaped by someone else\u2019s vision. The child trains instead of playing, performs instead of growing, follows a script they never chose. From the outside, it looks like a path to success. From the inside, it can feel like a contract whose terms were never negotiated. Not all pressure is motivation. Not every \u201csacrifice for the future\u201d is care. Sometimes it is simply violence\u2014told in the language of love.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violence that speaks the language of love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Psychology has long offered tools to describe such situations. Research on parental psychological control shows that violence does not have to involve shouting or physical punishment<\/strong>. It can take the form of emotional pressure, guilt, disappointment, or the withdrawal of acceptance when the child fails to meet expectations. In such a dynamic, a young person does not learn who they are. They learn what others expect of them. They do not develop autonomy\u2014they develop adaptability. And that is a fundamental difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a child has no right to boundaries, choice, or their own voice, parental care can easily become psychological violence.<\/strong> Good intentions do not erase consequences. A parent can love their child\u2014and at the same time take away their childhood, their chance to discover themselves, their right to say: this is not mine<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar dynamic appears in the recent film about Michael Jackson, which portrays his childhood. There too, \u201cfor the children\u2019s good\u201d\u2014for their career, for a way out of poverty\u2014the father imposed discipline, punishment, and absolute obedience. Talent became a cage.<\/strong> Success on stage did not heal childhood wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
