Independent and self-assured, yet seductive, mysterious, and intelligent. The femme fatale is the ruin of men, capable of driving them to destruction. This motif, familiar from literature and film, is not merely a feature of artistic imagination. It also appears in the stories of many societies<\/strong> and, interestingly, has an almost universal character. But do different cultures present her according to a similar pattern?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Professor William Jankowiak, an anthropologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, wanted to answer that question. He analysed stories from 84 different societies and checked whether the same pattern of action always appeared: a man becomes fascinated by an attractive unknown woman and pays a price for it. In as many as 94 percent of cases, that is exactly what happened.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n These stories are cautionary tales. They warn men about the risk they take when they enter into a relationship with an attractive but unknown woman. Many of them, however, do not rest solely on desire, but also on attachment and the wish to build a lasting relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Such stories have long been known, but the precise role the femme fatale plays in this kind of narrative has remained unclear. According to one interpretation, she reflects male-dominated societies, or more specifically, a narrative used to control women<\/strong>. Others argue that she is a response to risk and the force of attraction<\/strong>. In that view, such stories arise spontaneously in different cultures, rather than only as the product of a social structure imposed from above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Until now, however, researchers had not established whether the femme fatale is a story shaped by specific social structures or rather an expression of a shared human fear. That is precisely what Professor Jankowiak examined in his analysis. His point of reference was a database covering 186 cultures, though in the study itself he looked at stories from 84 societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On one side were more hierarchical societies; on the other, more egalitarian ones, marked by a more equal distribution of power<\/a> and resources. The anthropologist focused on social beliefs concerning danger, attractiveness, and relationships with strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He focused on 1 recurring pattern: a man meets an attractive but unknown woman, and their relationship ends badly \u2014 in humiliation, death, or ruin. The expert checked whether the way these figures were presented differed depending on the type of society.
