Academics continuously seek to understand why the sight of a suffering puppy stirs the human breast far more intensely than the plight of an adult human in distress. Given descriptions of physical assaults on a puppy, an adult dog, a human child, and an adult human, participants expressed near-identical levels of profound sympathy for the first three subjects.
