The researchers were interested in whether they more often pointed to good experiences. Alternatively, they wanted to know if young people pointed rather to difficult moments from childhood and adolescence.

They involved more than 1,400 young people in the experiment and followed them over the years. Participants answered questions at the ages of 15, 17, 20, and 24. The task was simple: they were asked to describe the most significant moments of their lives. After a detailed analysis using natural language processing methods, or NLP, psychologists found that as many as 83 percent of respondents’ answers had a positive, constructive character.

Formative memories are often ordinary days

These good memories among young people rarely involved grand events. Far more often, they concerned everyday matters: passing an exam, a new friendship, a successful trip, or an improvement in well-being. Psychological research suggests that, in the eyes of teenagers and young adults, growing up consists mainly of small but important steps forward.

In other words, among all the important experiences from childhood and adolescence, young people chose to describe those that had positively influenced their lives. As we read in the article published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, they most often talked about education and vocational training. This theme appeared especially frequently and concerned almost half of all the memories described by young people.

School, friendship, and the first step into adulthood

Interpersonal relationships came next: friendships and romantic relationships. Memories also appeared about personal development, well-being, moving out of the family home, questions connected with gaining independence, and travel.

This does not mean, however, that the young people questioned by researchers did not describe difficult experiences. Quite the opposite: they also recalled hard moments in life. Some pointed to the loss of someone close, conflicts, and breakups. Importantly, these life experiences did not pass without consequence and affected their mental health.

Difficult moments are most strongly linked to anxiety

Those who shared memories that were both important and difficult often showed more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. At the same time, they less often mentioned good life experiences. As the authors of the psychological study of young people emphasize, the analysis is purely observational. For that reason, it cannot determine the exact relationship between the events described and the mental state of those individuals.

After a few years, life changes completely

The long-term study showed how priorities changed among adolescents as they grew older, although in this case the results are not surprising. It turned out that 15-year-olds were mainly interested in friends, school, and leisure time. Over time, they placed greater emphasis on work, relationships, starting a family, and independent living.

Young people must first be heard

Previous scientific work focused primarily on examining and describing what goes wrong in the life of a young person: trauma, stress, or violence. Far less often did researchers ask members of younger generations which moments in life they considered most important.

This study gives adults an important lesson

What matters most in this study is how strongly it changes our image of growing up. It turns out that when we give young people a voice and ask what they truly remember as most important, we do not hear stories filled only with drama and crisis. Those naturally appear as well. Instead, we receive a rich mosaic of ordinary but deeply meaningful good moments: the first feeling of “I can do this” after passing an exam, an evening when a new friendship turned out to be very real, an extraordinary trip to another country, or the moment when they began to cope better with their emotions.

On the basis of these analyses, we can also draw the conclusion that good youth mental health cannot be built only in therapists’ offices or through prevention programmes directed against anxiety or depression. The seemingly ordinary moments are extraordinarily important: moments in which a young person feels, “I am moving forward,” “I matter to someone,” “I can manage,” or “this makes sense.”

In a time when, quite rightly, so much is said about the mental health crisis among teenagers, this study offers a rare and optimistic perspective. It reminds us that young people are not only victims of pressure and challenges. Above all, they are active creators of their own lives. When we ask them what truly matters, they very often show us its brighter side. Their formative memories show not only what hurt them, but also what helped them become themselves.

Read this article in Polish: Nie trauma, nie presja, nie konflikty.
