{"id":17674,"date":"2026-08-01T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/?p=17674"},"modified":"2026-08-02T13:26:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T11:26:26","slug":"kodokushi-is-coming-who-will-notice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/kodokushi-is-coming-who-will-notice\/","title":{"rendered":"When No One Knocks: Japan\u2019s Lesson in Loneliness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Half a century ago, the streets of Tokiwadaira rang with the shouts of children at play. Young married couples moved there because they liked the vision of life in newly built, massive apartment blocks full of families like theirs. Today, almost all one sees there are gray heads. This district of Matsudo, a city neighboring enormous Tokyo, now counts among the \u201coldest\u201d places in Japan. More than half of Tokiwadaira\u2019s residents are over 65, and about 15 percent live alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kodokushi-death-without-witnesses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kodokushi: death without witnesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In places like this, a tragic phenomenon has begun to reap its harvest. In Japan, it has its own name: <strong>kodokushi<\/strong>. The word means lonely death, a death no one knows about. Quite often, people discover the bodies of those who died alone only after several months, or even years. Tokiwadaira became the site of the first truly high-profile case of such a death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2004, in one apartment inside a giant block, officials discovered the body of a solitary man who had died 3 years earlier. No one had taken an interest in his situation because he had set up automatic payments from his bank account. Only after his savings ran out and rent transfers stopped did the services enter the apartment. This widely discussed case drew Japan\u2019s attention to a phenomenon that, over the years, would become an urgent social problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-elderly-loneliness-no-one-knocks-no-one-calls\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elderly loneliness: no one knocks, no one calls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Japan, the first country in the world to feel the effects of an <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/between-youth-and-old-age-the-way-we-manage-the-aging-process-affects-our-quality-of-life\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12430\">aging society<\/a>, the number of such cases grows year by year. Just 15 years ago, there were about 20,000 of them. But in the 2025 fiscal year, Japanese authorities recorded nearly 80,000 cases of kodokushi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that 5 percent of all deaths in the country now fall into this category. In 1 out of 10 cases, someone discovered the body only after at least a month. That is why, in recent years, Japan has seen the rapid growth of a new branch of the economy: specialized cleaning companies that remove the macabre traces of lonely death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-lonely-death-has-become-a-system\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lonely death has become a system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outlook grows more disturbing. In 2020, nearly 7.5 million Japanese people of retirement age lived alone. Over the next quarter-century, that number may reach 11 million. During the coronavirus pandemic, the number of single-person households in Japan already reached almost 40 percent of all households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem became so urgent that Japan created, in 2021, a ministry no one had heard of before. A ministry of loneliness and isolation now deals with the growing crisis of solitude and the challenges, and often outright tragedies, that follow from it. The minister who heads it received a gargantuan task: to \u201cglue\u201d back together a society heading toward a demographic abyss, a society in which once-natural human relationships have frayed and snapped because of the lack of children and other civilizational changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at Poland\u2019s changing situation, where loneliness is beginning to move to the forefront of social problems, Poles too should study Japan\u2019s lesson carefully. Poland also faces the threat of a wave of kodokushi, though we will certainly invent our own word for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-legislating-against-loneliness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legislating against loneliness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese authorities created the new ministry to coordinate nationwide efforts by nongovernmental organizations, volunteers, and local government institutions, all of which try in various ways to activate lonely seniors and build living neighborhood communities among them. In this respect, Japan presents a particularly hard nut to crack, because Japanese people tend, by nature, to show great restraint in interpersonal relations and  try not to \u201ctrouble\u201d others with their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Izumi Tsuji, a professor of cultural sociology at Chuo University in Tokyo, told <em>Deutsche Welle<\/em> that so-called anthill blocks, the enormous apartment buildings that have become a permanent element of large cities, have created part of the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We lived in communities where open spaces surrounded the houses. Children played together, and people spoke with their neighbors every day.We knew one another, and if someone needed help, a natural system of mutual support always existed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the researcher emphasizes, we can hardly overestimate the importance of human bonds for people\u2019s mental health, and not only for seniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, apartment-block residents often live isolated from one another. I do not think human beings were created for such a life. We need relationships with people around us, conversations, and daily contact with others,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Professor Izumi Tsuji says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/kodokushi_1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Population aging means that more and more seniors face isolation and weakening social ties. The Act on Measures to Address Loneliness and Isolation, approved by parliament in 2024, introduced a series of mechanisms that provide institutional support at different levels of the state to help activate lonely people. Across Japan, organizations devoted to \u201cpulling\u201d isolated people back into society began to spring up like mushrooms after rain. As officials explained, the problem lies in a deeply rooted social belief that asking for help simply does not befit a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the law passed, Keizo Takemi, Japan\u2019s health minister at the time, said: \u201cThe problem of lonely death will certainly only grow. That is why we must face it with full determination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-a-sensor-cannot-replace-a-neighbor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sensor cannot replace a neighbor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we already know, the residents of Tokiwadaira noticed this problem more than 2 decades ago. They did not need a push from the authorities to counter loneliness, especially among seniors, and launched their own \u201czero lonely deaths\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteers check on older residents who live alone, encourage them to leave their apartments and take part in numerous activities that strengthen neighborhood ties, and even install devices called \u201ckizuna\u201d in the homes of people who want them. Thanks to these devices, emergency services receive a signal if a resident does not move around the apartment for a longer period of time. This can also help after falls, which happen often among seniors and can end tragically if no one outside receives information in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-elderly-loneliness-poland-may-be-next\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elderly loneliness: Poland may be next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan\u2019s present is Poland\u2019s future, and not a very distant one. The dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/is-our-demographic-gap-just-another-dystopia-about-the-planet\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11073\">demographic collapse<\/a> in our country will only deepen the problem of loneliness and, as a result, will make more people experience old age alone, with all the problems and risks that follow. The statistics leave no room for comfort. In 2025, every 3rd household in Poland consisted of 1 person. Just 20 years earlier, that share stood at only 22 percent. Yet Poland still lacks a serious debate on this subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a discussion has begun elsewhere in Europe, including among our northern neighbors. In Sweden, where 40 percent of households already consist of 1 person, various mechanisms now aim to help lonely people form relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies there have launched interesting initiatives. For example, the Swedish pharmacy chain Apotek Hj\u00e4rtat pays selected employees the equivalent of 80 euros for time they spend building human relationships instead of working. In other words, as part of their professional duties, they can invite an acquaintance for cake and coffee. Does that sound amusing? Perhaps. But in Poland, a country increasingly struggling with an epidemic of loneliness, do we see any ideas at all for helping such people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kodokushi may still sound like a distant Japanese word.
