He wanted to determine which patterns of communication contribute to the deterioration of a relationship and, eventually, to divorce.

For the purposes of the research, a particular kind of laboratory was built: the Love Lab. There, researchers observed couples during ordinary conversations and while they tried to resolve conflicts. They monitored not only the words and language the participants used, but also facial expressions, gestures, and physiological responses such as heart rate and sweating.

These studies led to the development of the theory of the so-called “4 horsemen of the Apocalypse” (Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), meaning 4 especially destructive patterns of behavior during conflict that could predict the breakdown of a relationship with more than 90 percent accuracy. They were:

Criticism — criticism
Not: “It hurt me that you were late,” but: “You are always irresponsible.”

Contempt — contempt
Mockery, sarcasm, condescension, eye-rolling, treating a partner as someone inferior.

Defensiveness — defensiveness
Rejecting accusations, justifying oneself, and shifting blame: “It’s not my fault, you always…”

Stonewalling — withdrawal or shutting down
Silence, turning away from the other person, ignoring them, occupying oneself with something else, or simply “disappearing” emotionally.

The last of these “horsemen” seems especially interesting, because today it unfortunately appears more and more often in the way people communicate with one another.

What is stonewalling?

If we were to ask what stonewalling means, we could describe it as a behavior, or more precisely a particular stance toward another person, that involves cutting oneself off from conversation and emotionally “closing the door,” especially during conflict. In Polish, it can be translated as “a wall of silence,” “shutting down,” or “walling oneself off.”

The most common examples of this stance in everyday interactions include situations in which:

someone stops answering questions during an argument,

someone replies only with “I don’t know,” “whatever,” or “do what you want,”

someone ignores their partner or remains demonstratively silent,

someone walks away from the conversation without explanation and refuses to continue it,

someone avoids eye contact and withdraws emotionally.

Even more concrete examples of this behavior, especially during a conversation that turns into an argument, include staring at a phone or at the wall while a partner is saying something important and pretending not to hear anything. Or answering the question “What’s going on?” with a curt “nothing,” and then leaving the room without another word. Gottman and his team also pointed to gestures characteristic of stonewalling, such as crossed arms, a lack of physical contact, an expressionless face, and ostentatiously turning away from the person speaking.

It is not always about punishing the other person

These are behaviors most of us have encountered at some point in life, and we know from our own experience how destructive they can be for human relationships. That is why we need to pay attention to a crucial distinction: stonewalling does not always mean deliberately punishing someone with silence.

Sometimes a person feels so overwhelmed by emotions that they genuinely cannot continue the conversation. The signals they send do not necessarily aim to humiliate or “strike” the other person. They may be trying to protect themselves. Yet healthy and mature withdrawal from an interaction should be communicated clearly: “I am too upset to talk right now. I need an hour, and I will come back to this conversation tonight.” That kind of message gives the other person clarity and does not make them feel ignored.

When does silence become manipulation?

This is why it is worth distinguishing stonewalling from silent treatment, because at first glance they can look very similar. Yet the differences between them matter. The first may not be a conscious action at all, but rather an attempt to withdraw, calm down, or regulate oneself, carried out awkwardly and, as a result, destructively for the other person. Silent treatment, by contrast, has a much more calculated quality.

Psychologists emphasize one point in particular: silence itself does not yet amount to stonewalling or silent treatment. Context matters.

Imagine 2 people:

Person A: “I’m furious, and I’m afraid I’ll say something hurtful. I need a break. Let’s talk about this tonight.”

This may be healthy withdrawal or simply emotional regulation, not stonewalling.

Person B: “I’m not going to talk to you.” Then they ignore the other person for 2 days in order to punish them.

This looks much more like silent treatment.

In brief, then, if we understand stonewalling as a communication wall, silent treatment means silence used as a tool of conscious and deliberate manipulation of another person. Silent treatment is usually more intentional and punitive.

In the case of silent treatment, the intention is to punish the other person by deliberately withholding contact and replacing any answer with silence. The aim is to exert pressure or display one’s anger while deliberately disregarding the other person’s feelings. There is no clear message, only something unspoken but present in the mind: “I will not talk to you so that you feel the consequences.” It also comes with no information about when the silence will end and when the conversation can resume.

How should we respond to a “wall of silence”?

In his research, Gottman clearly emphasized that stonewalling does not necessarily begin with a lack of love or interest. Sometimes it begins with overload and an attempt at self-protection. At the same time, he stressed that when it becomes a permanent way of handling conflict — “I shut down, and we never return to it” — it becomes highly destructive for the relationship. Gottman explained that this mechanism of withdrawal may initially bring relief, but in the long run it worsens the dynamic of the relationship.

Stonewalling in relationships can mean several things

When we see that a partner is using stonewalling, we can respond to it in a very constructive way. But doing so requires specific knowledge and the right sequence of steps. The worst thing we can do in that situation is pressure the other person, which may only make things worse.

When we see that the other person has completely shut down, it is better to stop the discussion or argument. It is better to wait until emotions settle and send a clear message such as: “I would like to come back to this, so let’s talk in an hour.” Giving that person real space for a defined period usually helps calm the nerves on both sides of the conflict. This does not mean, however, that we must accept permanent ignoring. A break is healthy; a refusal to ever return to the problem is not.

The path Gottman proposed could be presented as a model:

I notice → I communicate → I take a break → I calm down → I return.

So instead of:

conflict → overload → silence → cutoff

we choose the path:

conflict → overload → “I need a break” → self-soothing → conversation.

We can therefore see that this is the most valuable part of Gottman’s concept. It remains highly useful in the way we conduct disputes with other people today. The goal is not to never need withdrawal. The goal is to learn how to withdraw in a way that does not abandon the other person. That is the real lesson of stonewalling in relationships: silence may sometimes protect us, but it should never become a place where the other person is left alone.

Read this article in Polish: Kiedy cisza zaczyna niszczyć związek?
