The presence of someone close makes it easier to cope with problems and helps us feel that we are not alone. Many ancient philosophers wrote about the role and meaning of friendship in human life.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle wrote that “without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods,” thus emphasizing the quality of a life that gains meaning only through friends. Epicurus, in turn, considered friendship 1 of the most important sources of human security and happiness, writing:

“Of all the things that wisdom provides for the complete happiness of one’s entire life, by far the greatest is friendship.”

Why is it so easy to confuse closeness with friendship?

There can be no doubt, then, that friendship enriches our lives across many dimensions of everyday functioning. It helps us grow and often gives us a sense of happiness and fulfillment. Yet a question arises: how can we recognize whether the relationship that connects us with another person is an authentic friendship?

Intuitively, we feel the weight of the word “friendship” itself. In practice, that means not every pleasant, enriching, or interesting acquaintance immediately becomes a friendship. It is easy, then, to fall into a certain confusion: on the 1 hand, a natural human hunger for a “kindred spirit” whom we can always trust; on the other, caution and the rational warning that not every nice person is your friend.

When the need for closeness hides warning signs

A strong need for closeness and longing for someone we can trust may cause us to lose sound judgment and stop realistically assessing whether someone who shows us various signs of affection is truly our friend. Young people are especially vulnerable to this inner disorientation. In their search for acceptance, they increasingly form relationships that contemporary psychology describes as love bombing.

Affection can also bombard a person

Love bombing, translated literally, means “bombarding with love.” It describes a situation in which someone, from the very beginning of a relationship, showers another person with very intense attention, compliments, declarations, or gifts. Such behavior can feel tempting and pleasant to the person receiving it, which makes it easy to believe that a true friendship is forming between us.

Why are young people especially vulnerable to it?

Young people often feel a lack of attention and understanding from adults. They face many difficulties connected with adolescence and with entering a world of rivalry, competition, and the rat race, where there seems to be no room for sentiment. For them, such expressions of affection, and above all interest, may feel priceless.

“At last someone sees me, hears me, and understands me,” “Someone finally cares about me,” “Someone finally has time for me and can focus their attention on me”

– these may be the first, and profoundly important, psychological feelings that arise in the mind during love bombing.

Intensity alone is not enough

Psychologists, however, urge us to “cool our heads” and look carefully at the signals directed toward us. On the 1 hand, they emphasize that simply showing a great deal of feeling does not yet amount to love bombing. What matters most are intensity, very rapid pace, and a later attempt to gain influence or control. To understand this mechanism better, it is worth looking at it closely. How does it work?

How does love bombing work?

The mechanism of love bombing among teenagers seems quite clear. In the simplest terms, it can be described as follows:

1. Rapid singling out → 2. Intense closeness → 3. A sense of exceptional bond → 4. Expectation of reciprocity → 5. Control or manipulation

From feeling special to becoming dependent

At the beginning, a new acquaintance may strongly emphasize that we are someone exceptional to them. They write a lot, want to meet often, confide very personal matters, and say that they have “finally found a true friend.” This can be emotionally nourishing, and in itself it does not have to be something absolutely bad.

The problem begins when intense closeness becomes a way of making the relationship dependent on 1 person. Unfortunately, that is often exactly what happens.

When other friends appear

To understand this better, it helps to look at concrete examples taken from life. Sometimes, at the beginning of a new acquaintance, we very quickly hear: “You are my best friend.” After only a few weeks, another statement appears: “I have never had this kind of bond with anyone before.” We see that the other person wants to spend almost all their free time with us.

They send text messages every day, comment in real time on everything we post on social media, and remain constantly present around us. The situation changes drastically, however, when other friends appear, people to whom we also want to give time and attention. Then comes the line: “I thought we were best friends. Apparently I’m not important to you after all.”

“Us against the rest of the world”

It is easy to notice a dangerous mechanism here: first, we receive a great deal of recognition and a feeling of being exceptional, and later that feeling is used to exert pressure, most often in the form of emotional blackmail.

Criticizing others and creating isolation

Things become even worse when statements of this kind begin to appear: “We don’t need other people; after all, we understand each other perfectly.” What follows is a growing criticism of our other friends, in the style of: “They don’t understand you at all. Only I am really on your side.”

A person using love bombing will try to separate us from other people, to claim us exclusively for themselves, and to build the belief that it is “us against the rest of the world.” This increases dependence on one relationship.

Why do people flood others with affection?

What is most disturbing in such a relationship is, above all, the pattern on which it is built: “First I will make you feel extremely important, and then I will use that bond so that you do what I expect.”

Healthy friendship leaves room

That is why, in friendship, it is worth observing not only how the other person treats us when everything goes their way, but above all how they react to our “no,” our own opinion, our other friends, and our need for space. Healthy friendship says: “You are important to me, but you have the right to be independent.”

A manipulative relationship more often communicates: “If I am important to you, you should behave the way I expect.”

It is not always planned

When looking for the causes of this kind of behavior in other people, it is worth emphasizing that love bombing may be a conscious manipulation technique, but it does not always have to be fully planned.

It may be connected, among other things, with a need for control, a strong fear of rejection, unhealthy relationship patterns, or difficulties regulating emotions, usually stemming from upbringing mistakes and deficits brought from home. This does not change the fact that we need to be careful and alert, because any form of manipulation can be dangerous.

What can happen?

In a healthy relationship, intensity usually gives way over time to stability, mutual respect, and space for both people. In the case of manipulative love bombing among teenagers, however, it may lead to:

emotional dependence on the other person,

lowered self-esteem,

isolation from family and other friends,

guilt over setting boundaries,

and in some cases also emotional violence or other forms of violence within the relationship.

Setting boundaries — the key defense

Above all, it is worth paying attention to what happens after a boundary has been set. This moment seems most important in recognizing the situation and observing the other person’s reaction.

Say that you need space

A natural and healthy message might be:

“I really like spending time with you, but I also need time just for myself.”

“I don’t feel like meeting today. I’ll get in touch when I have more space.”

“I won’t always be able to reply to a message right away.”

Do not give up other friends

It is also worth setting boundaries concerning other friends. We can express this in the following way:

“I’m glad we have this friendship, but I also want to maintain relationships with other people.”

“The fact that I meet other friends does not mean our friendship is less important to me.”

“I don’t want to choose between you and my other friends.”

Defend your own privacy

It is also extremely important to defend your own privacy, as well as your ability and willingness to offer help and support to the other person. We can signal this in the following ways:

“I don’t want to talk about this. It is private for me.”

“I would rather you did not tell others about what I shared with you.”

“I can’t help you this time.”

“I understand that you need this, but I’m not able to take it on.”

“I’ll help you if I can, but I don’t want you to assume that I will always be available.”

Do not give in to emotional pressure

And finally, there is what is usually most difficult in such relationships: setting boundaries against emotional pressure. This, too, can — and indeed must — be expressed clearly and concretely:

“The fact that we are friends does not mean I always have to do what you expect from me.”

“I don’t want to make decisions out of guilt.”

“I understand that you are hurt, but my decision remains the same.”

“Your disappointment does not mean I did something wrong.”

“I don’t want to prove my friendship by fulfilling every request you make.”

It is worth remembering, then, that true friendship is not about making the other person useful, obedient, or constantly available to us. True friendship is an authentic wish for the other person’s good, even when we can gain nothing from them.
