{"id":17937,"date":"2026-09-26T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/?p=17937"},"modified":"2026-09-27T16:16:55","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T14:16:55","slug":"purpose-of-education-what-should-school-teach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/purpose-of-education-what-should-school-teach\/","title":{"rendered":"Only School Can Change the World"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future does not belong to artificial intelligence. The future belongs to our children. To those who have just started school, and to those who finished it not so long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future of the world does not ultimately depend on artillery, drones, new technologies, or increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence. It depends on what human beings do with all of it. And that means that the future of humanity lies, above all, in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days ago, I watched <em>The Odyssey<\/em> at the cinema. In one scene, Penelope tells her son Telemachus that Ithaca cannot remain without an army and without defenses. She tells him about rumors concerning the Sea Peoples, who may attack the island. Telemachus asks: \u201cBut who are the Sea Peoples?\u201d He is filled with goodness and wants to defend his father\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watching that scene, I thought of <em>Waiting for the Barbarians<\/em> \u2014 my friend Michael Fitzgerald\u2019s film, which he fought to bring into existence for 30 years. Coetzee\u2019s story presents essentially the same mechanism. A threat appears. An enemy appears. Barbarians appear. And suddenly, something that previously would have been morally unacceptable is presented as a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, Michael and I have talked about the barbarian who not only comes from outside, but whom each of us can also find within ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems that the modern world is constantly waiting for its barbarians. At one time it is the threat of nuclear war, at another the struggle for resources, environmental degradation, a pandemic, or immigrants. We continue to live in anticipation of something that is supposed to come and threaten the order we know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBarbarians,\u201d \u201cSea Peoples,\u201d and the other threats presented to us do not necessarily have to be the true cause of our actions. Sometimes they are merely a story that allows a person to do something they were already inwardly prepared to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An external threat then serves a particular purpose. It takes the character of choice away from a decision and presents it as a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Violence becomes defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Betrayal becomes responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A moral compromise becomes a sacrifice for the greater good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the most dangerous alibi is not created to convince others. It is created to convince ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It allows a person to cross their own moral boundaries while preserving their image of themselves as an honest, decent person guided by principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is why we sometimes need an enemy not because they truly threaten us, but because they allow us, without feeling guilty, to do something we would otherwise be unable to forgive ourselves for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think about this in relation to myself as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About my own choices. My own convictions. My own inner struggle. About the search for something I call truth, although perhaps it is merely a story I have created so that I can continue to think of myself in a certain way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps this is precisely where the most important task of education begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>purpose of education<\/strong> is not to pass on ever greater amounts of information, prepare children for one exam after another, or even teach them how to find their way in a world of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing is to teach a young person how to recognize themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their own fears. Their own desires. Their own prejudices. The mechanisms that allow us to very quickly turn our own interests into a moral principle, fear into reason, and a story that suits us into truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can create the most sophisticated <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/chatgpt-and-creativity-who-is-writing\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17453\">artificial intelligence<\/a> in history and at the same time leave it in the hands of people who do not understand themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can build better drones, more precise weapons, more powerful computers, and systems capable of predicting the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But none of these tools will answer the most important question for us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should we do with them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human beings will always have to answer that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why, if we truly want to change the world, we must first try to change ourselves. And to change ourselves, we must first come to know ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school of the future should therefore not begin by asking what a child needs to learn.
