{"id":17974,"date":"2026-10-05T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/?p=17974"},"modified":"2026-10-05T10:22:43","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T08:22:43","slug":"nato-space-policy-a-new-view-of-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/nato-space-policy-a-new-view-of-conflict\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO Looks Up: The Changing Meaning of Security in Space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-space-warfare-a-real-threat\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Space Warfare: A Real Threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an analysis published in <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S026596462600041X?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Space Policy<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Zhou Shun and He Qisong show how the Alliance\u2019s view of potential threats in orbit has changed in just a few years. <strong>Space is no longer merely a technical extension of operations on Earth.<\/strong> It has become a distinct arena of competition. Two countries drove this shift, each in a different way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia provided the wake-up call. Its ability to disrupt and destroy satellite systems, followed by the lessons of the war in Ukraine, <strong>revealed how heavily modern military forces depend on assets in orbit<\/strong>. Without satellites, there are no reliable communications, no precise navigation, and no comprehensive picture of the battlefield. Taking away a military\u2019s satellites means more than removing a few devices. It is rather like depriving it of part of its vision and sense of direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia therefore accelerated NATO\u2019s response: exercises under conditions of interference, data integration, greater resilience, and procedures for situations in which space infrastructure no longer functions as it does in peacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-china-is-playing-a-longer-game\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">China Is Playing a Longer Game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But China, the authors argue, better explains where the Alliance is ultimately heading. Why? Because the issue extends beyond a single crisis or the threat of a particular attack. <strong>The challenge <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/china-conquers-space-first-asteroid-then-distant-comet\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14318\">China<\/a> presents is less dramatic, but more fundamental.<\/strong> Beijing is steadily expanding its capabilities and treats orbit as part of a long-term economic, technological, and military strategy. This pushes NATO beyond responding to events toward changing how it thinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-nato-in-space-without-a-space-army\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">NATO in Space, Without a Space Army<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hence the emphasis on interoperability, shared standards, cooperation with private companies, and the development of structures such as the Space Operations Centre. Major strategic changes often begin with new procedures and institutions rather than new weapons. NATO, however, is not building a separate space command of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It still relies primarily on member states\u2019 systems and commercial infrastructure. It has no space army and does not intend to take control of orbit. <strong>It is trying to ensure that more than 30 countries view space in similar ways.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-satellites-become-part-of-defense\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Satellites Become Part of Defense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means enabling them to agree on what constitutes a threat, when a malfunction becomes an attack, how to share information, and how to respond when satellites\u2014often owned by governments or private companies\u2014become part of a conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO does not make space law or dictate the rules governing the world\u2019s use of orbit. States and international forums remain the main settings in which those norms take shape. The Alliance works differently: it aligns how its members perceive threats, then translates that shared assessment into policy. This is where the most intriguing paradox emerges. <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/chinese-space-weapons-starlink-killer-microwave\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16583\">Russia<\/a> forced NATO to look up, but China ensured that the Alliance would no longer look away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-nato-space-policy-comes-of-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">NATO Space Policy Comes of Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Both countries have taught NATO that space is now an enduring part of competition between major powers.<\/strong> This amounts to more than another phase of military modernization. For years, the West treated space almost as a system that was simply supposed to work. Now it is becoming a place where technology, security, and political imagination meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO still does not control orbit.
