Success becomes the key to a life worth living. Without it, apparently, there is only dandruff and despair—so why bother living at all?

The Stoics propose the opposite. Epictetus begins by distinguishing between what depends on us and what lies beyond our control. Concern yourself with what you can control, and leave the rest to a higher power. Even then, let us not overdo the worrying. Better to assess the problem and consider what we can do, including asking for help, which is nothing to be ashamed of. Then wait for the results. In his Meditations, Marcus Aurelius repeatedly returns to mastering our own reactions, while Seneca explores how to preserve our inner freedom. But can someone who does not need to win all the time actually achieve more?

When a Problem Becomes a Task

Imagine 2 people. The first receives a rejection over something that matters deeply to them. Their thoughts circle around the same questions: “How could they do this to me? What is wrong with me? I have to prove them wrong.” The second responds differently: “It happened. What is within my control now?” The difference is enormous. The second person is not passive. Quite the opposite: they regain the energy to act because they are not wasting it fighting the fact that reality has failed to meet their expectations.

This resonates strongly with Ryan Holiday’s book Wisdom Takes Work: Learn. Apply. Repeat. Holiday popularizes the Stoic idea that an obstacle need not merely block action; it can become something to work with. That means noticing a problem, assessing it, and getting to work, rather than following a tempting but ultimately destructive pattern that changes nothing: problem, panic, complaining, a sense of grievance, inaction.

How Do You Keep Success From Taking Over Your Life?

What about the need to be noticed, appreciated, and acknowledged? Everyone has it, after all, and it is difficult to eliminate. Stoics understand this too, especially those living in the age of social media. But they recognize that this need can get in the way both while we pursue our ambitions and after we achieve success. If we give in to it, we may stop working for the result itself and start working for likes, praise, prestige, status, other people’s envy, or the feeling that “I am somebody.”

Then a paradox emerges: the more we need success, the harder it becomes to work calmly. An artist starts asking, “Will people like this?” rather than, “Is it good?” A writer asks, “Will anyone notice me?” instead of, “Do I have something important to say?” A businessperson asks, “Do I look successful?” rather than, “Am I solving a real problem for someone?”

Putting Stoicism Into Practice Also Means Having a Routine

How can we keep these needs in check in a world where almost everyone craves recognition, and having no social media presence feels almost like ceasing to exist? Routine can help, replacing constant stimulation. Calm allows us to work well in a world full of noise and pressure.

Let us not forget that routine is an underrated form of freedom. That may sound paradoxical, but if every morning we have to work out what we will do today, whether we feel like working, whether it makes sense, and whether we are motivated enough, we spend an enormous amount of energy negotiating with ourselves.

A Stoic routine can look entirely ordinary. I get up, do what needs doing, work, rest, read, and do it all again the next day. There is no need to experience every day as an epic struggle for success.

Someone obsessed with success asks, “How can I achieve more?” A Stoic asks, “How can I do what is in front of me today well?” The first looks at the result. The second looks at the action that leads to it. And the result, after all, lies partly beyond our control.

We can write a book, paint a picture, prepare a project, have a conversation, or do our jobs. What we cannot guarantee is that the book will become a bestseller, someone will buy the painting, we will receive praise, a customer will choose our product, or an audience will love us. Stoicism allows us to say: my task is to do my part well. The rest is not up to me. That is extraordinarily liberating.

The Art of Moderation

Someone might point out that Emperor Marcus Aurelius did not climb from the bottom to the top of the social ladder: he was born into wealth. He therefore had time to instruct others. An ordinary person who wants to get somewhere has to do a little worrying and figuring out how to earn money and exercise some control over themselves and others. That is true. Yet common sense reminds us that if we invest in education and keep our expectations of life and other people in proportion, we should have little reason to complain. Provided, of course, that our health holds up.

Research on well-being shows that once our income exceeds 10,000 Polish złoty, further increases no longer substantially affect our happiness. Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations is not a guide to acquiring more power. That alone suggests that power is not essential to a satisfying life.

Instead, Meditations records a continual effort to remind himself: practice moderation, carry out your duties, do not worry about other people’s opinions, remember that everything passes, respond sensibly, and do not let someone else’s behavior rob you of your self-control. There is a beautiful paradox here. A man with enormous power reminds himself that he cannot control the world.

Stoic Inspiration on Screen

Groundhog Day (directed by Harold Ramis, 1993) offers inspiration for finding our authentic selves and remaining true to them through a Stoic outlook. We can read it as an instructive story about the transformation of a man absorbed in his own wants.

At first, Phil Connors wants above all to possess, acquire, control, and get his own way. The endlessly repeating day deprives him of any escape from himself. Only when he stops focusing exclusively on his own interests does he begin to experience the same reality differently. Interestingly, the outside world barely changes. The person does. That is a distinctly Stoic structure. You cannot always change a situation. You can change the way you take part in it. And that creates room for new possibilities.

A Good Life Without “Success”

In Perfect Days (directed by Wim Wenders, 2023), Hirayama follows a very simple routine: work, music, a book, a bath, sleep, another day. From the outside, his life may seem devoid of ambition. But the film asks: does a life have to be spectacular to be good? It certainly stands in contrast to today’s culture of achievement. We do not constantly need a promotion, a bigger apartment, a bigger bank balance, more prestige, or a larger audience. Far more than that, we need work done well, relationships, time, quiet, an interest in something meaningful, and a steady rhythm.

Paterson (directed by Jim Jarmusch, 2016), meanwhile, is a film about creative routine. Its protagonist drives a bus and writes poems. He is not a celebrity. He does not obsessively build a personal brand. Instagram reach does not concern him. Nor does he make a performance of being an “artist.” He simply works, observes, writes, goes home, and does the same thing the next day.

Art does not need constant success. It needs someone who sits down to work every day. Fate will decide, however we understand it, whether fame, prestige, and money follow. If they do not, we will not feel that we have wasted our lives. We will still have done something that mattered to us and gave our lives meaning.

Stoicism Does Not Mean Giving Up Ambition

Stoicism, however, does not celebrate passivity. A Stoic can be highly ambitious. They may want to start a company, write a book, paint a picture, become a doctor, win a competition, or earn money. The distinction lies elsewhere. Ambition says: I want to achieve this. Stoicism adds: I will work toward it, but my sense of self-worth cannot depend on whether I achieve that exact result.

A Stoic does not have to be poor, because Stoicism does not say that money is bad. Money is an external thing. It can be useful, but it should not determine who we are. We can therefore have money and still be Stoics. The problem in today’s world is the belief that we must have money to feel that we have worth.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Ciągle czujesz, że robisz za mało. It means not responding to every attack with anger and being able to work without applause. It also means being alone without feeling defeated. A Stoic knows how to let go of what they cannot control and can keep doing something meaningful for years, even if no one notices during the first few.

Perhaps, then, the most paradoxical lesson of Stoicism in practice is that when we stop fighting obsessively for success, we recover the conditions that allow us to do truly good work. Not because we stop wanting things. Because we stop fearing that we will not get what we want.

Read this article in Polish: I po co się tak spieszyć?
