Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, two New York billionaires &#8211; Trump\u2019s son-in-law and his friend\u2014have <strong>sidelined American diplomats and taken the lead in reshaping the White House\u2019s foreign policy<\/strong>. Before Trump, <strong>America had never seen anything quite like it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billionaires have certainly wielded considerable influence over American diplomacy before, looking after their business interests abroad. <strong>David Rockefeller<\/strong> (1915\u20132017), for example, took a keen interest in protecting his business interests in the Middle East. Yet even that influence pales beside the clout Kushner and Witkoff enjoy within the American administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-trump-s-confidants-play-putin-s-game\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s Confidants Play Putin\u2019s Game<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both men made their fortunes in real estate. Now they travel the world, <strong>negotiating international \u201cdeals\u201d on behalf of Donald Trump<\/strong>, who says he trusts them implicitly. Last year, <em>Axios<\/em>, which has excellent contacts within the U.S. government, published an analysis of Witkoff\u2019s activities under the telling headline \u201cHow Trump\u2019s dealmaker is shaping U.S. foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Witkoff, in particular, has left an impression on people in our part of Europe because of his \u201cdistinctive\u201d approach to talking with the Russians. This has included complimenting <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/chinas-dominance-over-russia-grows-moscow-weakens\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15428\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> and portraying him as a caring, religious man. In a conversation with Tucker Carlson, Witkoff emphasized that Putin had told him he prayed for Trump after the attempt on his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was no secret that Witkoff, while representing the United States, had a keen understanding of the Russian perspective. In September this year, Witkoff and Kushner finally appeared in Kyiv. The Middle East also appears to be Witkoff and Kushner\u2019s most important arena abroad. Kushner played a significant role in negotiating the 2020 Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, as Democratic politicians and numerous mainstream American news organizations have pointed out for years, combining the role of a U.S. special envoy in international negotiations with running private businesses raises <strong>serious questions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some Democrats and government watchdog groups have expressed skepticism about Kushner\u2019s role in shaping the administration\u2019s Middle East policies while he manages billions of dollars in investments, including money from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, through his firm, Affinity Partners. Witkoff has similarly faced scrutiny over the extensive business ties that he and his family maintain with Gulf states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew Lee and Aamer Madhani highlighted these concerns in an Associated Press report last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, the Witkoff and Trump families entered the cryptocurrency business together, creating World Liberty Financial. Critics sounded the alarm when news emerged that <strong>a fund controlled by the authorities of the United Arab Emirates<\/strong> had poured $2 billion into the venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-musk-s-plan-for-taiwan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musk\u2019s Plan for Taiwan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No list of American billionaires influencing their country\u2019s foreign policy would be complete without <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>. The world\u2019s richest man broke with Donald Trump in spectacular fashion in June last year. Since then, however, relations between the two billionaires have become quite cordial again. The approaching congressional elections are a particular reason: the importance of Musk\u2019s financial backing for Republicans is hard to overstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk demonstrates his international power in several areas. One is <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic.news\/en\/starlink-satellites-in-the-sky-ozone-layer-risk\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14366\">Starlink<\/a>. According to a Reuters investigation, Musk ordered <strong>internet access cut off in key areas along the front<\/strong> during a Ukrainian offensive in the fall of 2022. The famous row a year ago between Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski and Elon Musk over Starlink\u2019s use also showed how directly the American tycoon\u2019s activities <strong>extend into foreign policy<\/strong>. Many politicians on Capitol Hill argue that this is the last opportunity to try to prevent China from growing powerful enough to pose a real threat to the United States. Trump initially sought to put pressure on Beijing through tariffs, but Musk did everything he could to <strong>temper Washington\u2019s hawkish impulses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This undoubtedly stems from the billionaire\u2019s <strong>extensive business interests in China<\/strong>, including a vast Tesla car factory in Shanghai. His stance on China has made Elon Musk deeply unpopular among Taiwanese people who favor their island\u2019s independence. In a 2022 interview with the <em>Financial Times<\/em>, the Tesla chief suggested that Taiwan should become a \u201cspecial administrative zone\u201d under an agreement with Beijing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-everything-for-the-oligarch\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everything for the Oligarch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Countries such as China and Russia have no shortage of the superrich. Some, including the <em>Financial Times<\/em>, have called him \u201cModi\u2019s Rockefeller,\u201d underscoring his close relationship with India\u2019s prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-adani-and-modi-a-business-symbiosis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adani and Modi: A Business Symbiosis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adani competes with Mukesh Ambani for the title of India\u2019s richest man. The two trade places at the top of the list. In doing so, however, India\u2019s prime minister has damaged his country\u2019s relations with at least two neighbors, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as countries such as Kenya\u2014places where Adani\u2019s projects have caused local controversy and resentment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-great-power-few-consequences\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Great Power. Few Consequences.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports like these have made people across India aware of <strong>just how much influence their billionaire wields over foreign policy<\/strong> as he expands his empire around the globe.
