The End of the Mouse and Keyboard. Microsoft Reveals Its 2030 Plan

Windows without a keyboard. This is what Microsoft's AI revolution is supposed to look like.

Microsoft is announcing the end of the mouse and keyboard era. By 2030, Windows computers will act as intelligent assistants, responding to voice and context. Is this the start of the biggest revolution in computer history?

Microsoft Unveils Its Keyboardless Windows 2030 Vision

Microsoft’s partnership with AI is not new, but now, this cooperation is gaining revolutionary momentum. On August 4, 2025, the company presented its vision for the future of Windows, which it aims to implement by 2030. A lot is set to change over the next five years, mainly due to AI.

Artificial intelligence will no longer be just an add-on to the system. In the future, it will become an integral part of the entire Windows OS, leading the company’s technology. What does this specifically mean?

The computer user will control the device with their voice, and the AI will fulfill their requests. This means a mouse or keyboard will no longer be needed. The entire experience will resemble a conversation with an assistant.

The AI Revolution: The Keyboardless Computer as a Personal Assistant

“The computer will be able to see what we see, hear what we hear, and we’ll be able to talk to it and ask it to perform much more advanced tasks. I believe this will be a much more natural form of communication. The world of clicking a mouse and typing on a keyboard will seem as foreign as using MS–DOS is to Gen Z today,” explained David Weston, Vice President of Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, in an interview on the official Windows YouTube account.

MS–DOS was the original version of Microsoft, dating back to the 1980s. The system was based on a very simple formula and didn’t even have graphics.

Windows Without a Keyboard. A New Voice-Controlled System

In the Windows 2030 Vision, David Weston also explained that the traditional graphical user interface (GUI) will disappear. In its place, multimodal communication will emerge. What does this mean?

The new keyboardless Windows system will understand not only the user’s voice commands but also the context of their statements. We will no longer click through menus and windows to instruct the system; we’ll just use our voice. As a result, AI will coordinate the work of multiple files and systems in a very similar way to how AI now manages multiple browser tabs. This is the most significant change the company’s representatives want to introduce because it will completely transform the core function of operating systems.

The emotions that arose after the announcement of the planned Windows changes are quite muted. The public fears they will be stuck with a specific AI system without the option to choose other AI tools. Moreover, some people point out that the previously announced Copilot revolution did not deliver on its promises. Users accuse the company of having an intelligent assistant that seems underdeveloped and forced.

Nevertheless, the changes are already being implemented gradually. Time will tell if the AI revolution will become a reality.
